“Never go into the deep parts of the forest, for there are many dangers there, and they will ensnare your soul.”

Serafina has never had a reason to disobey her pa and venture beyond the grounds of the Biltmore estate. There’s plenty to explore in her grand home, although she must take care to never be seen. None of the rich folk upstairs know that Serafina exists; she and her pa, the estate’s maintenance man, have secretly lived in the basement for as long as Serafina can remember.

But when children at the estate start disappearing, only Serafina knows who the culprit is: a terrifying man in a black cloak who stalks Biltmore’s corridors at night. Following her own harrowing escape, Serafina risks everything by joining forces with Braeden Vanderbilt, the young nephew of the Biltmore’s owners. Braeden and Serafina must uncover the Man in the Black Cloak’s true identity… before all of the children vanish one by one.

Serafina’s hunt leads her into the very forest that she has been taught to fear. There she discovers a forgotten legacy of magic, one that is bound to her own identity. In order to save the children of Biltmore, Serafina must seek the answers that will unlock the puzzle of her past.

I picked up Serafina and the Black Cloak because I visited the Biltmore Estate when on vacation in Asheville, North Carolina. When I found out that a young adult novel used the Biltmore Estate as it’s setting, I had to have it. Little did I know that it was also a fantasy novel. Could this book be more up my alley?

You certainly don’t have to visit Biltmore to read Serafina, but throughout the entire novel I was able to vividly picture every scene. Having visited Biltmore really added to my reading experience. My mom wants to read it as well just because of the setting.

As for the storyline, I really enjoyed it. I found aspects of the story to be rather original ideas. I had never heard of a catamount before, and it made for an interesting premise. I also thought the magic behind the cloak was a very clever idea.

It was a good fantasy novel and I can’t wait to see what Serafina does in the next book. She is such a unique character, far from perfect, but that’s part of what makes her so likable.

In my quest to keep up with what my kids are reading (I am way behind), I picked up “Serafina and the Black Cloak” this weekend – after my wife and I started reading out loud to our kids on a car trip.

Wow. It’s a great book – perhaps particularly for kids who feel they don’t fit in or don’t make friends easily. It’s an adventure set at the Biltmore Estate while the Vanderbilts still lived there. It follows Serafina, who secretly lives in the basement with her father. She embarks on an adventure to discover her roots, rescue a group of children, and make a friend her own age. I’m doing a terrible job of selling it, but it’s a magical read.

Magical and sweet, Serafina and the Black Cloak reads a little bit like Harry Potter crossed with Clue. It has the awe and the perspective of being a kid in a grown up world, and the wonderment of grand mansion, mystery, and maybe even some class issues. It has that flair of a wild and fun romp that reminded me of when my Dad read me Redwall. Fantastic!

What a neat story! Once I hit the story of Serafina’s birth, I was totally hooked. LOVED the ending! I feel like this is a good, creepy book for middle grade readers. It really is spooky at times, so make sure the reader isn’t too much of a chicken…LOL!!! Serafina is a great character with a lot of courage, and I admire that. I am looking forward to booktalking this book next school year!!!

I really enjoyed this! As someone who is mildly familiar with the Biltmore, it was really cool to read a fantasy set in the estate. It was creepy and darker than I expected, but so interesting and neat. A cute middle grade book and perfect for lovers of both fantasy and mystery.

  1. I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the layout of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?
