Trapped, his family missing – how can ancient wisdom tell him how to survive? This powerful, true-life drama shows us how to triumph over every darkness. Home in India on holiday, Viral Dalal is vacationing with his family when a 7.7 magnitude earthquake—one of the most ferocious in history—collapses the high-rise building where, just the night before, he had celebrated being together with his family. Now, buried under tons of rubble, in total darkness, without food, water, light, or the ability to even move—and with the ceiling hanging precariously just inches above his head—all Viral wants is to find his family. The cement box he is trapped in, however, will not yield – and hours crawl by. Then a full day, and another, and another… Is anyone even looking for him? Or is he buried alive? Forgotten? What would you do, trapped in such a predicament? What is going to help him now? This bold, challenging, breathtaking tale of courage reveals the source of willpower that drove a man who would not give up. What he learned, we can all learn – about ourselves, and about life. In every life, there is a source of strength. Do you know yours? What Viral learned by going to his sources of inner strength can change your perspective on living. I have such mixed emotions about this book. It was very heartwrenching to read about the author’s family after an earthquake devastated their home and took lives. The author was buried under tons of concrete in the aftermath of the earthquake and did not know the fate of his family since he had slept late that day and was not with them when the earthquake hit. He had been in the US studying for 15 months and had just returned home to his loving family when this occurred. It was really hard to read about all of this.

On the other hand, I feel like some parts of this story were SO repetitive. When something is repeated in a story so many times, the reader almost gets immune to the meaning of it. (There were also many typos, but that didn’t bother me as much as certain aspects of the story being repeated over and over.) The premise of this book is real and emotional; it is a story that needed to be told and was very informative about the way that someone copes in life threatening situations. I do feel like it could have been written better.

I received this kindle version from the goodreads giveaway. Viral Dalal has just returned to India after attending college in New York. Within a couple days of his stay in India, the country suffered a devastating Earthquake. Viral and his five relatives were buried in the remains of a fallen concrete apartment building. For five days he was trapped under the rubble. He knew he had to remain as calm as possible. On the fifth day he was rescued. Afterwards he was at the site waiting for his family to be removed from the remains of the building. this is his story and how he coped for the years to come. The earthquake happened in January of 2001. I do not want to give spoilers of what happened to his family. I give him credit to learn how to move on from this horrible time of his life.

I received this book after a lengthy delay as part of a Goodreads giveaway. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to read this fascinating account of being trapped during an earthquake. Mr. Dalal exhibited such courage during his ordeal. His perseverance came from the inner qualities that he absorbed through his parents, especially his fathers strength and ability to think clearly in all situations. The love he had for his family permeated every page and his will to survive was driven in great measure by his desires to rescue his family. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Mr. Dalal is Indian since I have liked and admired every Indian I have ever met. The only criticism is the book cover photo should have had a photo of Mr. Dalal.

Choosing Light: When an Earthquake Buried Me and My Family for 5 Days, I Learned to Fully Live
by Viral Dalal is a story of strength, and learning form a horrible incident. THE author and his family were trapped in the rubble of the high rise building where they were staying after a 7.7 earthquake. Being buried for 5 days made Viral Dala thinking about what is important in life. He came out of the whole process strong and learning that he was stronger than he thought. HIs story is a reminder that things especially life can change in a second. It is well written.

I received a copy thru a Goodreads Giveaway.

Wonderful storytelling

I read this book through a Goodreads giveaway. It is not normally the type of book that I read so fate intervened and sent it to me.

I cannot imagine what this young man as gone through and how he came back from his edge of darkness but he did,

The story unfolds beautifully. I could imagine this author sitting beside me, retelling the story. A great family who truly loved one another. A young man holding onto life in the direst of situations.
How he found the strength inside himself not just to go on but to flourish in the life that was meant to be

Thank you
