Description:

A collection of true stories about money, the stock market, and high finance from the Gerald Loeb Award-winning “unbelievable business writer” (Bill Gates).

For decades, author and New Yorker staff writer John Brooks was renowned for his keen intelligence, in-depth knowledge, and uniquely engaging approach to the dramas and personalities of the financial and business worlds. With a style of prose that “turns potentially eye-glazing topics . . . into rollicking narratives,” Brooks proved that even the bottom line can be moving, hilarious, and infuriating all at once (Slate). Here are three of his most fascinating works, which still resonate today.

Business Adventures This collection of entertaining short features is a brilliant example of Brooks’s talents, covering subjects such as the Edsel disaster, the rise of Xerox, and how corruption may be an irreparable part of the corporate world.

“Brooks’s deeper insights about business are just as relevant today as they were back then.” –Bill Gates, The Wall Street Journal

Once in Golconda An incisively examined chronicle of the euphoric financial climb of the twenties, the ruinous stock market crash of 1929, and the unbelievable hardship and suffering that followed in its wake.

“Brooks is truly willing to give up his own views to get inside the mind of all his subjects.” —National Review

The Go-Go Years A humorous look at the staggering “go-go” growth of the 1960s stock market and the ensuing crashes of the 1970s in which fortunes were made overnight and lost even faster.

“An unusually complex and thoughtful work of social history.” —The New York Times

I admit I was excited about learning that this book was recommended by a lot of the great managers and entrepreneurs of our time, but sadly I was extremely disappointed by how it turned out. The stories are badly written, the takeaways are not obvious and they are so outdated that I find it hard to think and apply any of it in my current work situation.

Wow, a book from 1969 actually predicted many of the things we’re still experiencing now! Blows my mind everytime i read this book. Although i don’t understand some of the nuances of the book, those that i did understand gave incredible insights into human nature. Highly recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t mind the style of writing and non-spacing.

Very dated business context together with old english writing style makes this book very difficult to read. Also, for the author just told the story with focus on people and the challenges & business decisions they made, not to pinpoint any specific business lesson, the book requires readers to look at the big picture and think deeply into the “Adventures” side, not the “business” side.

This 50 year old book will remain relevant 50 years later

Unbiased reporting and thought provoking, topics discussed are very much relevant today despite being written 50 years ago.

Style of writing in several chapters tend to be tedious relative to modern literature, while others are captivating and a breeze to read through.

The author’s writing style is very dry, but the combined effect of these essays is to give insight into the day-to-day corporate world that tends to get overlooked by media headlines. The background on Xerox, the Texas Gulf Sulphur insider trading trial, corporate neglect of shareholder wishes – some of the essays are more interesting than others, but together they make for an interesting read.
