Thug Kitchen started their wildly popular web site to inspire people to eat some Goddamn vegetables and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Beloved by Gwyneth Paltrow (“This might be my favorite thing ever”) and named Saveur’s Best New Food blog of 2013—with half a million Facebook fans and counting—Thug Kitchen wants to show everyone how to take charge of their plates and cook up some real f*cking food.

Yeah, plenty of blogs and cookbooks preach about how to eat more kale, why ginger fights inflammation, and how to cook with microgreens and nettles. But they are dull or pretentious as hell—and most people can’t afford the hype.

Thug Kitchen lives in the real world. In their first cookbook, they’re throwing down more than 100 recipes for their best-loved meals, snacks, and sides for beginning cooks to home chefs. (Roasted Beer and Lime Cauliflower Tacos? Pumpkin Chili? Grilled Peach Salsa? Believe that sh*t.) Plus they’re going to arm you with all the info and techniques you need to shop on a budget and go and kick a bunch of ass on your own.

This book is an invitation to everyone who wants to do better to elevate their kitchen game. No more ketchup and pizza counting as vegetables. No more drive-thru lines. No more avoiding the produce corner of the supermarket. Sh*t is about to get real.

I am so grateful to my friend who turned me onto their blog, and from their I found the cookbook. This is one of the few cookbooks I’ve really “connected” with and felt suited my personality and such. I found myself chuckling a lot as I read the paragraphs, as well as the item descriptions. The layout and design, as well as the pictures are engaging and appealing, too, without being too “fluffy.” It’s also not like overly masculine, either.

Three stars for the recipes, a whole extra star for the prose. I loved all the swearing and straightforwardness, found myself laughing out loud a couple of times.

You wouldn’t guess it from the title or the cover, but this is a vegan cookbook. Flavors lean Mexican, with some Asian influence – like Thug Kitchen’s home city of L.A. These folks use a lot of the same sci-fi ingredients that Angela Liddon of “Oh She Glows” does, but somehow they seem easier to swap out here.

This cookbook has so many great recipes, I have used ones from all categories and few to none were duds. I am a college student so cheap eating is very important to me and the recipes can be lengthy in the ingredients list but a lot of them are staple pantry ingredients and the recipes do make a lot so once i make something it lasts for days and days, my absolute favorite recipe from the book has to be the tortilla soup (I had people knocking on my door asking what I was making because it smelle

While there are a number of things I could say about the absurd racism allegations being hurled at this book, I will refrain. All I’m willing to say is… Chill, it’s a cookbook. Don’t take shit so seriously.

“You eat food every day. You should know what the fuck is going on.”

It’s that simple. And if you don’t have your knickers in a twist, Thug Kitchen is a funny and accessible approach to healthy meals. You’re going to get an assortment of healthy, yummy looking, meat-free recipes that don’t require a trip to Diagon Alley for ingredients. You’re going to get helpful how-to’s, nutritional insight on the ingredients you’re using, advice on how to stock a healthy pantry, and info on basic kitchen gadgets to make the job easier. Also, a whole lot of f-bombs.

Love love love this book. First, it’s written hilariously full of swears. Ok, I might be immature to find it amusing but you can honestly just read this book and not cook and learn something and get a laugh or two. Second, I made 2 dishes from this that were both huge successes. The sriracha cauliflower with peanut sauce was so good I made it 2 nights in a row. Third, I finally was successful cooking awesome tofu.
